The closing parade of the giant catamarans will continue as originally scheduled on Saturday, March 31st in and around the Old Port in Marseilles. The "Three Sisters" will sail together, escorted by hundreds of sailing yachts.
This will be a big celebration Marseille style, this city with such a long sailing history.
Team Legato and Warta Polpharma are in identical wind and sea conditions heading north upwind into the north-easterly trade winds. They will have to make long tacks to reach the Canary Islands and the Strait of Gibraltar beyond. Seas are choppy with 6-10 foot swells and the ride is uncomfortable for all aboard. Sleeping is difficult. The only comforting factor is the warm air temperature.
Team Legato projected finish:
Team Legato - 'the Survivors' - crossed the equator 9:45 PM Sunday
Fred Dahirel: "We were expecting worse sailing conditions. It is easier to beat to windward in the long seas that we have at the moment and the going is not too bumpy. It’s quite enjoyable. Especially now that we have someone to race against for the first time in the race, that is nice. We are keeping a close eye on them to make sure we keep our distance."
"When we left the equator behind us yesterday, we sailed into an enormous squall with 40-knot winds. It did not last long but it was very intense. We quickly found ourselves with too much sail out because we hadn’t seen it coming. With the boat flying a hull, six or ten feet in the air, we eased out as much sail as we could and took down the solent. Team Legato is not built for sailing on one hull. The loads are just too great in that situation."
Team Legato has covered 272.2 nm in the last 24 hours.
They are currently 2866 nm from the finish, which they must reach in 7 days.
To make the finish they must cover 409 miles per day.
Warta Polpharma projected finish:
Those Fabulous Poles - left two crew members in Fortaleza
Roman Paszke: "We are sailing north and quite far west. We have 20 knots of wind but we are avoiding sailing too close to the wind because we don’t want the port hull to be under strain. The people from Multiplast [original builders and designers of Warta] advised us not to do so for four or five days and to avoid contact with waves. We know we won’t finish before the end of The Race, so it is better not to push too hard. When we reach 15 degrees north, we will start to head east - not before. At the moment we are enjoying the great sailing conditions. It is sunny, the temperature is 26°C. It’s better than in Poland!"
Roman Paszke is steering almost due north (0345), apparently aiming to reach the northeast trade winds as soon as possible and get back on the direct route towards Gibraltar, the last obstacle before reaching their goal in Marseilles.
Warta Polpharma has covered 290.8 nm in the last 24 hours.
They are currently 3033 nm from the finish, which they must reach in 7 days.
To make the finish they must cover 433 miles per day.
