The closing parade of the giant catamarans will continue as originally scheduled on Saturday, March 31st in and around the Old Port in Marseilles. The "Three Sisters" will sail together, escorted by hundreds of sailing yachts.

This will be a big celebration Marseille style, this city with such a long sailing history.

A press release from The Race headquarters in Paris last week read: "For the two other competitors, The Race goes on. It is obvious these two boats will be finishing The Race out of time (deadline 30 days after the finish of the first, or 2 April 2001), this rule having been defined by the challengers themselves."

"However, the organizers have decided to leave the line open to allow the boats to finish in Marseille, come what may, even if it is quite clear the challengers will be continuing to race under their own responsibilities as from 2 April. The boats will be declared finished, fourth and fifth, out of the time limits."

Team Legato is on a better heading than Warta-Polpharma and is making better progress than the Polish boat, which is having difficulty beating upwind.

The Poles are committed to reaching 15 degrees North before altering their course. This is costing them both time and distance. Warta is presently at 39 degrees West, while Team Legato is at 31.5 degrees West. As a comparison, both Club Med and Team Adventure also sailed past this point at 31 degrees.

Team Legato projected finish:

Team Legato - 'the Survivors' - 2000 miles from Gibraltar
Paul Larsen: "Although we have a 209-mile advantage over the Poles in terms of distance to the finish yesterday, we place more value in our upwind position. We are trying our hardest to consolidate this by trying to place Team Legato between Warta Polpharma and Gibraltar. This would allow us to block them whatever the circumstance. The situation as it stands has us sitting firmly on their hip, which is pretty good. But it's not perfect, since it leaves them a small window should conditions change. If the wind veers more to the east as it has done overnight, it favors us. If it moves towards the north, it favors them."

"It is forecast for the next couple of days to favor us. The weather north of the trade winds is less certain at this stage so we have to cross that bridge when it comes."

Team Legato has covered 281.0 nm in the last 24 hours.

Warta Polpharma projected finish:

Those Fabulous Poles - protecting the port hull
the wind is dead against the Polish challenger, leaving the skipper in the difficult position of wanting to push east but also needing to protect his boat.

Warta Polpharma has covered 300.3 nm in the last 24 hours.
