Team Legato - 'the Survivors' - heading for Las Palmas, Canaries
Team Legato's mast-step ball joint upon which the mast is stepped broke and the mast moved downwards, remaining more or less vertical, in what was a dreadful din. The crew grabbed the shrouds to prevent the boat from dismasting altogether.

Carbo Spars based at the Hamble England, is currently making a replacement part which will be flown out ready for their arrival in Las Palmas.

Bullimore: "If things go well, we could be in and out of port within eight hours, and then it will be full speed for the Strait of Gibraltar and the Marseille finish line."

Paul Larsen: "The offending piece is the ball-and-socket joint which connects the base of the mast to the boat. It locates the mast in position, takes the massive compression loads and allows the mast to rotate to give the best angle of attack to the wind."

"The break occurred just beneath the ball part where it temporarily narrows before flaring out into the base. The whole mast, complete with ball still in socket, had dropped backwards off the stump and settled on the large metal base plate fixed to the beam. The jagged stump was sticking up into the carbon base of the mast just forward of the socket, hence the mast was being supported at two points. This has the effect of locking the mast in position so as it can no longer rotate."

Warta Polpharma projected finish:

Those Fabulous Poles - gaining on Team Legato

Polpharma is now heading north-east towards Gibraltar. They have gained 78 miles on Team Legato.
