The Canadian Rave Class Association held its annual National Championship and Rave Rendevous in Toronto, June 23-24, 2001 in conjunction with the Flying High Regatta and Division 16 Championship, held at Etobicoke Yacht Club, with a record number of 60 entries! Avid Rave hydrofoilers travelled from Florida, North Carolina, Michigan, Ontario, and even a keen new Rave owner from Ireland flew in to pick up his boat and race the championship before shipping it home to Ireland. Strong easterly winds a few days before the regatta provided excitement for two of the Toronto Rave skippers who set local foiling speed records sailing their boats to the regatta site. However, the Saturday/Sunday regatta was raced in light to moderate conditions. Light air tactics prevailed and the pilots of these normally high speed foiling trimarans made effective use of flap controls, wand decouplers and foil uphauls as they continue to innovate and improve light air performance of their machines. Regatta organizers added a reaching mark to the normal windward/leeward beach cat course to give the Raves foiling opportunities. Racing was keen and close in the shortened 3 race series and the Raves were invited back for next years event. Now for the fun stuff:
There were many prizes for the racers, including fun prizes where the judging and presentations were made by the youth sailors (tye-dyed shirts) for participants that they found particularly memorable.
On Sunday, awards were presented after a barbecue to Don Walton, Mike McGarry and Scott Charlesworth. Results are as follows:
