Mystere 4.3 selected as boat for 2002 USSA Youth Cat National Championship

US Sailing - Youth Multihull Championship

Yves Sansoucy, President of Mystere International, near Montreal, Quebec has agreed to provide twenty new Mystere 4.3s for use at the 2002 USSA Youth Cat National Championship. This is for a completely equipped boat with two sets of trapezes, a mylar mainsail, dacron jib, spinnaker, and snuffer.

THE DEAL
These twenty new Mystere 4.3s will be sold after the event and are available for order now. The boats cost $3800. US including customs and delivery to Port Clinton, Ohio and are available immediately following the Youth Championship regatta (Sunday, July 14, 2002). The boats are available for purchase on a first come, first served basis until twenty orders are secured with a check for at least half the purchase price ($1900. US). The check should be made out to Mystere International and specify US dollars. As of May 24th, eight boats were already sold.

THE BOAT
This boat, with a smaller rig and known as the Mystere TYKA in Europe, has been chosen by the French Sailing Federation for their catamaran trainer and because the French are mad about sailing, their choice of this boat is very complimentary. The boat is a fiberglass boat with a skeg that features a protective aluminum strip on the bottom to prevent damage. The skegs allow excellent windward ability while increasing simplicity by eliminating two boards and opening up deck space. They are especially nice in shallow and/or weedy waters. There is no boom for simpler, safer sailing and fewer parts to handle and maintain. This also reduces rigging time and reduces weight. The mast is a simple spreaderless rig and is easy to step. ALL the gear is first rate; Harken Black Magic Carbo Air blocks for the mainsheet, Harken roller bearing traveler, Harken jib blocks with built in cleat, and Ronstan Auto Ratchet spinnaker sheet blocks. The spinnaker is made of Dynalite, silicone impregnated cloth, for better snuffing and no water absorption. Spars and beams are anodized aluminum.

This is a great boat to teach someone to sail due to: its simplicity and adaptability (can be sailed cat rigged, sloop rigged, or either of those with spinnaker), it’s easy to handle on shore and in the water even solo, and it is large enough for double-handed racing or cruising with four. It is easily righted by a single, small adult or two children. It has high stability yet its narrow hulls are easily driven to high speeds and the smooth hull/deck joint with rounded forward deck provide excellent resistance to pitchpoling. It is a great boat for experienced racers to learn, or improve, spinnaker handling techniques. It also allows adults to be able to sail more often since they can safely sail alone and can handle everything on or off the water. It rewards the experienced helm with sports car like steering - so quick that the spinnaker sheet can be cleated as the helm steers to trim the spinnaker instead of playing the sheet.

Compare all these features and price to retail prices of $3800 for a new Hobie Wave (mainsail only) or $6500 for a new Nacra 4.5 (without spinnaker). This is a great boat for a bargain price and a way to directly help get youth sailors into beach cat racing! With the high versatility and the low price, this is a great choice for a second cat for existing owners!

The boats will be available at Port Clinton Yacht Club in Port Clinton, Ohio immediately following the regatta on Sunday, July 14th, 2002.

Note:
Although Mike Fahle owns other kinds of boats, Mike is familiar with Mystere as an owner of a Mystere 6.0 since 1994, a Mystere 4.3 since 2001, and a Mystere 5.0 Extreme since 2002.

This coordination is being done on a voluntary, unpaid, basis to help introduce Junior Sailors into beach cat racing, to pass on savings directly to the owners, and to have more of the Mystere 4.3s to sail with in the area. He coordinated a thirty boat Mystere 4.3 deal last year that introduced the boat to North America on the same volunteer basis.

You can visit the Mystere owners’ website for more information at:

Please contact Mike with any concerns or questions and not Mystere directly. Mystere International is being very generous with this deal and we want to show them our appreciation as much as possible.
