New for 2001, the Escape PlayCat is a 16 foot polyethlene catamaran, designed by Melvin and Morelli for Escape. This is the same designer as PlayStation (that is why it is called the PlayCat).

Pete Melvin and Gino Morrelli also designed:

  • the Hobie Wave
  • Inter 18
  • 20' Ventilo Formula 20 cat
  • 18' A-Class cat

Escape is renowned for easy to maintain, easy to sail, economical boats that are ideal for pleasure sailing. Since the hulls are made of polyethylene, these boats need almost no maintenance, the hulls are not sensitive to banging. Hull color is characteristic yellow, for high visibility in the water. Rudders do not lock down, this radically different design does not require long rudders. The mast comes apart in two pieces for ease of transporting and storage.

Interesting statistics are that 50% of Escape owners never sailed prior to their purchase and many of them taught themselves to sail their Escapes.

Design Characteristics
  • Polyethylene hull construction provides years of fun and reliance
  • keel sgeg form, to assist in tacking
  • Protected inboard rudders mounted under the hulls rather than transum hung. For worry-free beach launching and landing
  • Canted hulls offer increased stability and performance
  • Extremely user-friendly layout with only two control lines!
  • Continuous and spacious trampoline with snag-free construction
  • Fully-battened boom-less sail plan for solo or group thrills
  • Two-piece, rotating mast and internal halyard sits on a ball foot and is supported by four shroud/forestay wires incorporating keyhole attachments for fast and easy rigging.
  • The sail is loose footed (no boom) and fully battened.
  • The only sail control is the multi purchase mainsheet.
