Editorials from the racers and volunteer teams - Day 1Matt Bounds, PRO - Conditions were really nice when we first went out, 13 knots from the south west, first race went off and people were a bit antsy, there were 3 OCS boats. Wind built to 15 to 18 knots in the rest of that first race. The waves built to 2 meters, and we were planning to run a 3rd race, then things went pear shaped quickly. Best moments - boat flipping over right next to the committee boat. They managed to right the boat just in time before hitting the committee boat. As the middle of the pack was finishing ni the 2nd race, the wind went nuclear, and that's when we pulled the plug. Todd Riccardi commented on his second race. "We got an awesome start," he said. "We were just burning a hole ten seconds long and we really punched out. We came in second at the windward mark...stuffed at one point today. And then we were about to jybe...it was pretty narly, just insane. Downwind, I didn't know what we could do to save it." John Casey and Dalton Tebo state, "There was a chick on the commitee boat who flashed us and she made us go over the mark too early. We really enjoyed sailing on fresh water...got a wave in our face and we were still able to see. We won a race, so we're happy." Robbie Daniel and Gary Chu said, "In the first race, we were in fourth and then we flipped. We were going around A-mark, then capsized. I was trapezed and then got washed off the boat by a wave." "We had a collision on the start," said Giselle Vaziri. "We were on starboard close to committee boat. The other boat was on our port. A big wave came...we managed to push each other off in time, but it was a close call." "We stayed upright and didn't break anything," said Ed Young. "There were just great waves, we were solid heading up and it was a super rollercoaster ride down wind." Fearless Johnston Hall helped right two boats today and he plucked two crew out of the water. "We were watching the Morflo Team guys in the F18," he said. "The skipper just fell out of the boat. I was watching...he was still harnessed in and then he just popped back in...it was amazing! You'll have to ask him how he did it." "On my first save," said Hall. "I remembered to take of my hat, leave the VHF radio and my car keys. But I forgot to take off my sunglasses. They are somewhere on the bottom of Lake Ontario." |
